I want to share a framework that completely changed how I approach my work and helped me prevent burnout while maximising my impact. Based on Gay Hendricks' concept, understanding these four zones has transformed how I work, lead and create.

My journey with the Four Zones

I discovered that I operate in four distinct zones throughout my professional life. The key to my sustainable success and fulfilment has been maximising time in my Zone of Genius while strategically minimising time spent in the other zones.

The Four Zones I navigate

1. My Zone of Incompetence

These are activities I struggle with that others can do better. When I'm working in this zone, I:

  • Frequently make mistakes
  • Feel my energy and enthusiasm draining
  • Struggle despite practice
  • Experience frustration and anxiety

Examples from my experience include financial modelling (as a creative professional), technical coding tasks and detailed administrative work when I'm naturally a big-picture thinker.

When I spend too much time here, I experience burnout, decreased confidence, and diminished results. I've learned to delegate, automate or eliminate these activities whenever possible.
